Pre-Production Thoughts - 03.02.09
I'm thinking about doing something along the lines of dog camping. I recently purchased a bunch of stuff for my dog to be able to take him backpacking. I'm hoping that I can incorporate these items into a shot with a white background.
Pre-Production Thoughts - 03.06.09
After discussing my ideas with Ruwan and Brent, I have decided that I have a solid start, but I need to have something other than a white background. Ruwan suggested that a white background would make the image look too much like product photography. So, I have decided to track down a tent and use that as my setting. I am also thinking about getting some green carpet (fake grass) from Home Depot to make it look more realistic.
Pre-Production Shopping - 03.08.09
After asking around for tents that I could borrow, it seems as though people use their tents for camping leaving them dirty and unpicturesque. I went to the store this morning and bought a tent so that I could use it for this shoot (as well as for camping). I also picked up a matching chair just in case I need something to block light, hide an extension cord or just look good.
I had already purchased various accessories for my dog to go backpacking with me including, a backpack, life vest, boots and various toys. These items are all from the same company, Ruff Wear. Since all of these products happen to be the same brand, I was glad to take advice from Ruwan and Brent to avoid the shoot looking like a product shoot.
The green carpet idea was great but purchasing something that I'll never use again didn't fly with my wife (but I did get a tent out of the deal).

Shoot Setup - 03.08.09
Ruwan was shooting photos of the seniors when I arrived at the photo studio. So, I got busy setting up my tent. Once he was done, I moved my tent into place and he assisted me in getting started. Being that it was my first time using studio lights, his help was invaluable.
After talking about the kind of look I was going for, Ruwan and I ended up deciding on a two-light setup. I focused a large soft box on my subject and placed a second light in the tent to both give rear lighting and a glow within the tent.
